Mount Clemens is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan. The city is located in southeastern Michigan, about 30 miles (48 km) northeast of Detroit. As of the 2010 census, the city had a total population of 16,314. It is the county seat of Macomb County.
One of the city’s most notable features is Mount Clemens Landing, an openair shopping mall located downtown, which frequently hosts events such as concerts and car shows. The city is also home to Wolcott Mill Metropark, a county park with an antique steam engine and working gristmill.
The city was named after Christian Clemens, a United States land surveyor who platted the village of Clemensville in 1819. Clemens and his partner, John McNames, built a dam on the Clinton River and erected a sawmill, which became known as the first waterpowered sawmill west of the Allegheny Mountains. In 1827, Clemens platted the city and named it Mount Clemens. The name was later shortened toMount Clemmons, which is still the city’s official nickname.

The city was first settled by Europeans in 1795. The area was platted as the village of Clemensville in 1818. It was named for Christian Clemens, who was the first settler in the area. The village was renamed Mount Clemens in 1873. It was incorporated as a city in 1879.
The city grew rapidly in the late 19th century and early 20th century. It became a popular summer resort for affluent Detroiters. The downtown area was redeveloped in the 1920s and 1930s.
