History of Moundsville
Moundsville is a city located in the northern panhandle of West Virginia, United States. The city has a population of 9,318 people as of the 2010 census. The city is the county seat of Marshall County. Moundsville was settled in 1788 by Samuel Zane, who named it after the nearby Grave Creek Mound. The mound, one of the largest conical type burial mounds in North America, was built by the Adena culture (1000200 BC). It is now the centerpiece of the Grave Creek Mound Archaeological Complex, which includes a museum and interpretive site.
Moundsville became the county seat of Marshall County in 1833. The city was chartered in 1859. The West Virginia Penitentiary was located in Moundsville from 1876 to 1995.
