History of Moses Lake

Moses Lake is a freshwater lake located in Grant County, Washington. The lake is named after the nearby city of Moses Lake. It is the largest lake in the county and the fifth largest lake in the state. The lake has a surface area of 8,200 acres and is approximately 20 miles long and 5 miles wide.

The area around Moses Lake was first inhabited by the Native American tribes of the Yakima, Cayuse, and Spokane. The first recorded European exploration of the area was in 1811 by the British explorer David Thompson. Thompson noted the presence of a large lake in his journal but did not name it. The lake was officially named Moses Lake in 1884 by the U.S. Geological Survey.

The city of Moses Lake was originally named Neppel after one of its early settlers, Edmond Neppel. The name was later changed to Moses Lake in 1918 when the post office was established. The city was incorporated in 1937 and has a population of over 20,000.
