History of Morgantown
Morgantown is a city located in the U.S. state of West Virginia. The city has a population of around 30,000 people and is the county seat of Monongalia County. Morgantown is located in the northcentral part of the state, along the Monongahela River.
The area that is now Morgantown was first settled by Native Americans of the Delaware and Shawano tribes. The first European settlers arrived in the late 1760s. The town was originally known as Travers’s Landing, after the settler Henry Travers. In 1769, the town was renamed Morgansville, after settler Zackquill Morgan.
In 1785, Morgansville was made the county seat of Monongalia County. In 1838, the town was renamed Morgantown after Zackquill Morgan’s son, Colonel Levi Morgan.
During the American Civil War, Morgantown was a Unionist stronghold. In 1861, the town was occupied by Confederate troops for a short time. In 1863, Union troops under General George Meade defeated a Confederate force in the Battle of Morgantown.
After the war, Morgantown became an important industrial center, due to its location at the confluence of the Monongahela and Cheat rivers. The town was also home to the West Virginia University, which was founded in 1867.
