History of Morganton

Morganton is a city in and the county seat of Burke County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 16,918 at the 2010 census. Morganton is one of the principal cities of the HickoryLenoirMorganton, NC Metropolitan Statistical Area.

The earliest known inhabitants of the governing land of Morganton were the Catawba Indians. The Catawba were led by a chief who resided in a village located in what is now the city’s Cherry Street Historic District. The city of Morganton takes its name from Revolutionary War general Daniel Morgan. Morganton was created by an act of the North Carolina General Assembly in 1784, officially becoming the county seat of Burke County in 1787.

Morganton’s early history is similar to other small towns in the Appalachian Mountains. First settled by farmers who grew tobacco and other crops common to the Piedmont region, the area was frontier until the late 18th century. As settlers moved into the foothills in search of more land for farming, the community developed along the banks of the Johns River. A tobacco warehouse, stores, and homes were soon erected. By 1807, Morganton had two trails leading to it, one from Asheville and one from Lenoir.

In 1784, the newly formed Legislature of North Carolina passed an act to establish Morganton. The town was named after American Revolutionary War General Daniel Morgan. The act gave 50 acres (20 hectares) of unappropriated lands around the courthouse to be used as a jail, courthouse, and other public buildings.

A year later, Burke County was formed from parts of Rowan and Anson counties. Morganton became the county seat and Burke County’s first courthouse was built on the 50 acres (20 hectares) of land donated by the Morganton act. Additionally, the county’s first jail was also built on this land.

In 1791, both Burke County and Morganton were moved from the western part of the state to the newly established 10th Judicial District. The 10th Judicial District was made up of Burke, Wilkes, and Buncombe counties. This arrangement lasted only four years. In 1795, Burke and Wilkes counties were combined to form the 23rd Judicial District with Morganton as the county seat.

Morganton continued to grow throughout the early 19th century. The town’s first newspaper, The Western Star, was established in 1815. In 1855, citizens of Morganton voted to incorporate the town, electing Davie Ray as mayor and James Gwyn as recorder. The population of the town had increased to 1,879 by 1860.

During the Civil War, some citizens of Morganton supported the Confederacy while others supported the Union. Burke County sent several militias to different armies during the war. In May 1865, Confederate General George Stoneman and his troops camped in Morganton while he considered options for attacking the Union garrison at Asheville. After learning that Asheville had been reinforced, Stoneman decided against the attack and his troops left Morganton.

In the early 1870s, the Western North Carolina Railroad was completed to Morganton, bringing new opportunities for industry and trade. The first of these industries was the Morganton Lumber Company, which began operation in 1874.Also during this time, the Johns River Power Company was chartered and constructed a dam on the Johns River upstream from the city. The dam provided hydroelectric power for the new lumber company as well as for the town.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Morganton became known as a furniture hub, with many furniture factories locating in the area. These factories were fueled by the abundance of timber in the surrounding mountains. The first furniture factory was the Chambers Furniture Company, which was established in 1881. In 1908, W.C. Curtis started the Curtis Furniture Company. By the 1920s, there were more than 15 furniture factories in Morganton.

Today, Morganton is home to a number of historical landmarks. The restored historic downtown area includes the Burke County Courthouse, built in 1885, and the Morganton Public Safety Building, built in 1923.
