History of Morgan City
Morgan City is a city in St. Mary Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 12,404 at the 2010 census. Morgan City sits on the Atchafalaya River and Berwick Bay in southeastern Louisiana. It is about 50 miles from Baton Rouge and 75 miles from New Orleans. The chief industry is oil and natural gas extraction and related support activities, with most wells located offshore in the Gulf of Mexico. The town was founded in 1860 by Charles Morgan, a wealthy sugar cane planter, who acquired much of the surrounding land and built houses, businesses, and roads.
Morgan City was originally named “Tiger Island” by Morgan, who oversaw the construction of a levee and railroad track that ran through the swampy area to connect it with other parts of Louisiana. The levee and tracks were completed in 1873, and the town flourished as a hub of trade and shipping for the region. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Morgan City became known for its large shrimpprocessing plants.
