History of Morgan City
Morgan City is a city in St. Mary Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 12,404 at the 2010 census. Morgan City sits on the Atchafalaya River and Berwick Bay in southeastern Louisiana. It is about 50 miles from Baton Rouge and 75 miles from New Orleans. The chief industry is oil and natural gas extraction and related support activities, with most wells located offshore in the Gulf of Mexico. The town was founded in 1860 by Charles Morgan, a wealthy sugar cane planter, who acquired much of the surrounding land and built houses, businesses, and roads.
Morgan City was originally named “Tiger Island” by Morgan, who oversaw the construction of a levee and railroad track that ran through the swampy area to connect it with other parts of Louisiana. The levee and tracks were completed in 1873, and the town flourished as a hub of trade and shipping for the region. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Morgan City became known for its large shrimpprocessing plants. The city also had a large fishing industry, with many commercial fishermen plying the waters of the Atchafalaya River and nearby bayous for shrimp, oysters, and other seafood.
The oil and gas industry has been the mainstay of Morgan City’s economy since the early 20th century, when oil was first discovered offshore in the Gulf of Mexico. The first offshore wells were drilled in 1914, and the first offshore oil production platform was built in 1947. Today, there are more than 4,000 offshore oil and gas wells in the Gulf of Mexico, and Morgan City is home to a major oilfield service industry.
The 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill was a major blow to Morgan City’s economy, as the city is located just east of the site of the spill. Tourism and fishing were both adversely affected by the spill, and the city’s shrimpprocessing plants were idled for months as a result of the closure of shrimp fishing areas in the Gulf. However, Morgan City has rebounded in recent years, due in part to the opening of a new casino in 2013 and the expansion of the city’s port facilities.
