History of Morehead City

Morehead City is a coastal town in Carteret County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 8,661 at the 2010 census. Morehead City celebrated the 150th anniversary of its founding on May 5, 2007. It forms part of the Crystal Coast.

The first settlers of the area were the Waccamaw Indians, who settled here as early as the 1600s. In 1734, tobacco planter John Lawson arrived and laid out plans for the town, which he named for his friend and political ally, James Morehead. Lawson built a wharf on the town’s riverfront and allowed the town to prosper.

In 1747, Morehead was named the county seat of Carteret County. In 1783, the city was officially incorporated.

During the Civil War, Morehead City was occupied by Union troops in 1862. It was shelled by Confederate troops in 1863 in retaliation for the Union’s bombardment of Fort Macon.

The 1980s brought new growth and development to Morehead City, with the construction of the Harbourfront Promenade and the Morehead City Port Terminal. Today, Morehead City is a thriving coastal community with a thriving economy and a rich history.
