History of Moore
The city of Moore, Oklahoma was founded in 1891 as a stop along the Sherman, Denver & Gulf Railroad. The city was named after Al Moore, the engineer who laid out the rail line. Moore was originally part of Oklahoma Territory, and became part of the new state of Oklahoma when it was admitted to the Union in 1907.
Moore continued to grow throughout the early 20th century, and by the 1950s was home to over 10,000 people. The city experienced a period of rapid growth in the late 20th and early 21st centuries, due in part to its proximity to the growing metropolis of Oklahoma City. Today, Moore is home to over 55,000 people.
The city of Moore has a long history of tornadoes. The first recorded tornado in Moore struck on May 3, 1899, and since then there have been at least 38 tornadoes that have impacted the city. The most destructive tornado occurred on May 20, 2013, when an EF5 tornado struck the city, causing 24 deaths and injuring 377 people.
