History of Montrose
Montrose was settled in 1859 by a group of prospectors from southern Colorado. The town was named after Mount Rose, the highest peak in the area. Montrose was incorporated in 1882 and soon became an important stop on the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad. The town grew rapidly, and by 1900 it had a population of over 2,000.
The early 20th century was a boom period for Montrose. The town became the regional center for agriculture and livestock, and its population reached 5,000 by 1910. New businesses and industries moved into the area, attracted by the growing economy. The Montrose Water Company was founded in 1910, and the Montrose Power Plant was completed in 1911.
The 1920s were a time of expansion for Montrose. Several new schools were built, and the population continued to grow. The Montrose Memorial Hospital was established in 1925.
