History of Monroeville

Monroeville is a small city located in Monroe County, Alabama. It was established in 1815 by settlers from Georgia and South Carolina. The city is named after James Monroe, the fifth president of the United States. Monroeville served as the county seat of Monroe County from 1821 until 1887, when the county seat was moved to nearby Monrovia. The city was incorporated in 1904.

The Monroeville area was originally inhabited by Creek Indians. The first European settlers in the area were French traders, who established a trading post near the creek in the early 1800s. The creek was later named after them: Monroeville Creek.

In 1811, the Creek Indians ceded their land in Alabama to the United States government. The following year, American settlers began moving into the area. Among them were James Monroe and his family, who settled on a plantation just outside of what is now Monroeville.

Monroe County was established in 1815, and Monroeville was made the county seat. The city was officially incorporated in 1904.

During the Civil War, Monroeville served as a hospital town for Confederate soldiers. After the war, the city’s economy was primarily based on agriculture. The county courthouse and other government buildings were constructed in the city during the late 1800s and early 1900s.

Monroeville began to experience population growth in the 1920s, due in part to the construction of a new highway that connected the city to other parts of Alabama. The city’s population continued to grow throughout the mid20th century.

Today, Monroeville is best known as the hometown of Pulitzer Prizewinning author Harper Lee. Lee’s 1960 novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, is set in the fictional town of Maycomb, which is based on Monroeville. The novel was made into an Academy Awardwinning film in 1962.

Every year, Monroeville hosts the Alabama Shakespeare Festival, which is one of the largest Shakespeare festivals in the United States. The city is also home to a number of historic buildings, including the Old Monroe County Courthouse, which was used as a model for the courthouse in To Kill a Mockingbird.
