History of Monroe (Louisiana)
Monroe is the eighthlargest city in the U.S. state of Louisiana. It is the seat of Ouachita Parish in the northeast corner of the state, on the Ouachita River.
In the early 19th century, Monroe was the capital of Louisiana. The city has several historic landmarks and is the site of the University of Louisiana at Monroe.
The origins of Monroe go back to the 1830s, when the settlers John Temple and James Whitaker negotiated with the Choctaw people for land on the Ouachita River. The Choctaw people occupied this area prior to European settlement and had established a village called Ouachita.
In 1831, theChoctaw ceded the land to the United States and in 1833, Monroe was founded as a little trading post. The town was named for President James Monroe who was in office at the time.
Although the American Civil War led to economic hardship in the city, by the end of the 19th century Monroe had become a thriving center of the timber and cotton industries. The city’s population doubled between 1880 and 1900.
During the first half of the 20th century, Monroe continued to grow and prosper. In 1927, the city completed construction of the Fifth District Court House, which is now on the National Register of Historic Places.
