Monmouth is a city in United States and the seat of Monmouth County. The city is on the Monmouth River, which separates it from Newark in Essex County to the west. Monmouth is served by New Jersey Transit’s North Jersey Coast Line and its river line.
The city was founded in 1667 by Sir George Carteret and John Berkeley, 1st Baron Berkeley of Stratton. From the late 19th century until the mid20th century, Monmouth was a beach resort town and many wealthy New Yorkers constructed large summer homes there. The town still retains much of its historic character and its array of fine Victorian architecture. The historic district covers about one square mile (2.6 km2) and includes such landmarks as the Hall of Records, First National Bank, Public Library, and train station.
The city has a number of parks, the largest of which is Riverside Park along the Monmouth River. This park features a children’s playground, bandstand, gazebo, basketball and tennis courts, fishing, and a boat launch. There is also a dog park and an amphitheater that hosts concerts and other events.

History of Monmouth
In the early 17th century, Monmouth was part of the Wapentake of West Riding in the Yorkshire County of England. It was then a small market town and parish, with a population of around 500. The town’s market charter was granted by King James I in 1617.
In 1649, the town was the site of the Battle of Monmouth during the Second English Civil War. Parliamentarian forces under General Oliver Cromwell defeated the Royalist army of King Charles I. The town subsequently changed hands several times during the war.
After the war, Monmouth became a county town in the newly formed county of Monmouthshire. It prospered as a market town and administrative center. In the 18th century, it was a popular spa town, andHosts many notable guests including Samuel Johnson, Horace Walpole, and King George III.
The 19th century saw the construction of the Monmouth Market House and the expansion of the industry and railway network. The town continued to grow in the 20th century, with the addition of new schools and a hospital.
