History of Moline
When the first European settlers arrived in the region, the area now known as Moline was inhabited by the Sauk and Meskwaki Native American tribes. French explorers first visited the area in 1673, and the first permanent settlement wasn’t established until 1843, when Colonel George Davenport built a cabin on the banks of the Mississippi River.
The city of Moline was officially incorporated in 1848, and soon after, it became an important stop on the Underground Railroad as escaped slaves sought to reach safety in the northern states. The city’s strategic location on the river also made it an important hub for commerce and industry, and by the early 20th century, Moline was home to a number of large manufacturing plants, including John Deere, the maker of agricultural equipment.
