History of Mission

Mission is a historic city in Hidalgo County, Texas. The city is part of the McAllen–Edinburg–Mission metropolitan area. Mission is one of the oldest cities in the Rio Grande Valley. The first inhabitants of the area were the Coahuiltecan Indians. In 1681, Spanish Franciscan missionaries established the Misión Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe de los Chinamitas (Mission of Our Lady of Guadalupe of the Little Straw Mats) near presentday Mission. The mission was abandoned after the Mexican War of Independence. The town of Mission was established in 1844 by Padre Narciso Rendon of Reynosa.

In 1885, the St. Louis, Brownsville and Mexico Railway reached Mission. The United States census recorded 1,756 residents in the town in 1900. The population grew to 5,532 by 1910. During the Mexican Revolution, General Manuel González stationed his troops in Mission in 1911cementing the town’s importance. In 1915, the Villista advance on the Rio Grande flowered just south of town at Berlín, but the railroad yards in Mission remained unscathed during the fighting. In 1926, an oil well was drilled at the Hidalgo County Courthouse. The Mission Chamber of Commerce was organized in 1930.

The Hidalgo Irrigation District was created in 1944. Water from the Falcon Reservoir helped to increase agricultural production in the valley. The City of Mission was incorporated in 1950. The citrus industry began in earnest in 1966 when TransTexas Citrus Associated Juice Processors built a $15 million plant in the city. By the 1970s, Mission had become the “Winter Garden of the World” with over 100,000 acres of farmland devoted to growing citrus fruit.

The Historic Battlefield at Resaca de la Palma State Park, site of the 1846 Battle of Resaca de la Palma, is located just north of the city. The sand dunes at Bentsen–Rio Grande Valley State Park provide a habitat for the endangered ocelot and a variety of bird species. The World Birding Center has four sites in the Lower Rio Grande Valley, including one in nearby Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge.
