History of Mishawaka

Mishawaka is a city on the St. Joseph River in Indiana, United States. The city is the county seat of St. Joseph County and is adjacent to South Bend, the fourth largest city in Indiana. The population of Mishawaka was 48,252 at the 2010 census. Its nickname is “the River City”.

The city was originally established in 1820 as a trading post on the St. Joseph River. It was named after Chief Mishawaka, a Potawatomi Indian chief said to have been buried in a log cabin along the river. The city was incorporated in 1833.
