Minden is a city in the state of Nevada. The city is located in the northwest part of the state, about halfway between Reno and Lake Tahoe. The city has a population of about 3,000 people. Minden is the county seat of Douglas County.

The city was founded in 1906 and was named after the German city of Minden. The city was originally settled by ranchers and farmers. The city’s economy is still based on agriculture, but it has also become a bedroom community for Reno and Lake Tahoe.

The city is home to the headquarters of the Cabela’s retail chain. Cabela’s was founded in Sidney, Nebraska, about 60 miles (97 km) east of Minden, in 1961. The company moved its headquarters to Minden in 2012.

The city is served by Minden–Kearney Municipal Airport.

Minden is known for its Czech heritage; as of the 2000 census, 18.6% of the city’s population was of Czech descent. Minden has a Carnegie Library, built in 1903 with money donated by Andrew Carnegie. It is one of only two Carnegie Libraries remaining in Nebraska; the other is in Central City.

The Minden Opera House is another historic building in the city. It was built in 1889 and is still in use today. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.

The Minden Fairgrounds are also on the National Register of Historic Places. They were built in 1934 and have been home to the Minden Fair since 1935. The fairgrounds include the Minden Coliseum, an arena that seats 3,500 people.

History of Minden

Minden is a city in Webster Parish, Louisiana, United States. It is the principal city of the Minden Micropolitan Statistical Area, which is part of the larger ShreveportBossier CityMinden Combined Statistical Area. The population was 13,082 at the 2010 census. Minden is the seat of government of Webster Parish.

The city was established in 1839 by Charles H. Veeder, a native of Schenectady, New York, who named it for the city of Minden in Germany. Veeder left Minden after only a year and returned to Wisconsin, leaving behind his private secretary/bookkeeper, Cornelius Vanderwater. Vanderwater’s son, John C. Vanderwater, would later become mayor of Minden.

The town was originally developed on land donated by plantation owner James Cane to the Louisiana Association, which then established the Minden Female Seminary (now Centenary College of Louisiana) in 1854. A log courthouse was erected on the land in 1858. The city of Minden was incorporated in 1871. blacks outnumbered whites by 2,500 to seven hundred. In an election in early 1887, black citizens voted one thousand to ninetysix for Republican mayoral candidate William Vance and one thousand to seventyseven for his Democratic opponent Robert E. Mitchell.

The public elementary school for blacks was Harris Street School, later relocated to St. Denis Street as Booker T. Washington School. When fuel supplies were disrupted during World War II, Minden was the site of the first bulkfed wood gasification plant built in the United States. The historian John D. Winters in his 1953 history of Webster Parish notes that during Reconstruction and for some years afterward, Minden had “one of the most striking examples” of cooperative ventures between blacks and whites in the parish. A group of ten white men and two blacks established the Steam Laundry Company in 1884. Winters writes that the laundry “was never a financial success,” but he calls it “illustrative of the liveandletlive spirit prevalent in Minden during those trying years.”

In his second term as mayor, James C. Ewing, a wealthy planter, made a major contribution to the Minden library by donating $1,500 worth of books. The Ewing Memorial Library, as it was then called, was housed in a room above Ewing’s Bank of Minden. When the bank moved to a new building, the library was given a room on the first floor. In 1925, the board of trustees changed the name of the library to the Minden Public Library.

The effectiveness of the Minden Police Department was enhanced in 1955 when Chief Elwood V. Gaddis obtained two surplus World War II jeeps from the federal government and equipped them with radios. Prior to that time, the chief and his two patrolmen had to rely on personal vehicles and were often unable to respond to calls for help in a timely manner.

The North Louisiana Agricultural Exposition, now known as the Minden Agricultural Fair, was first held inMinden in 1924. That fair was sponsored by the Minden Chamber of Commerce, the City of Minden, and the Webster Parish Fair Association. The Fair was held annually until 1935 when it was discontinued due to the Great Depression. It was revived in 1947 and has been held annually ever since.

The Roaring Ranger steam locomotive, that once hauled timber from Bodcau Bayou to the sawmill in Minden, is now on display in downtown Minden. The Roaring Ranger was built in 1941 by the Lima Locomotive Works in Lima, Ohio. It is a 282 Mikado type, one of only two such engines remaining from the hundreds once used in the United States.
