Milnrow is a large town in the Metropolitan Borough of Rochdale, Greater Manchester, England. Historically part of Lancashire, it lies on the River Beal, 4 miles (6.4 km) eastsoutheast of Rochdale and 6.8 miles (10.9 km) northwest of Oldham. Milnrow is separated from Shaw and Crompton by therivulet called the Spodden, which joins the River Beal at the southeast end of the town. The M60 motorway passes to the south and east of Milnrow.
The town is recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086, under the name of Melvinrow, as held by Roger de Poitou. There were two manors in the township, one held by the service of three Knights’ fees, the other by the service of one Serjeanty.
The town of Milnrow grew around the industrialised lower Spodden Valley, which led off the larger Rossendale Valley. The first evidence of Milnrow’s growth comes in the form of a corn mill, dating from the early 13th century. This was followed by fulling mills, used for processing cloth. In the early 19th century the introduction of power looms led to Milnrow becoming an important centre for textile manufacture. The town was served by the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway from 1840. passenger services were withdrawn in 1966 but some freight services remain.
The parish church of St James was consecrated in 1846. The present building dates from 1881 and was designed by J. S. Crowther. There are also Methodist, Baptist and Catholic churches.
Milnrow expanded greatly in the late 19th century with the development of worker’s housing estates, such as Whitegate, in response to the needs of the expanding local industry. Many of the original houses have now been demolished, but some remain and are occupied by students of Manchester Metropolitan University.
The town was home to one of the first purposebuilt working men’s clubs in the country, the Milnrow Working Men’s Club and Institute, which was opened in 1864. In response to the needs of the growing population, Milnrow Urban District Council was formed in 1894.
The town had a variety of industries, including coal mining, engineering, textiles and farming. However, the collapse of the coal and textile industries in the late 20th century led to Milnrow becoming a predominantly residential town.

The name Milnrow is derived from the Old English words myln and row, meaning “mill” and “row” respectively. It was recorded as Milnehrow in 1212 and as Milnarow in 1292.
Milnrow was a small hamlet until the Industrial Revolution, when it became a mill town. The first mill was built in 1764, followed by others in the 19th century. The mills were mainly concerned with textile production, particularly wool.
Milnrow was part of the township of Newhey until 1894, when it became an urban district. In 1933, it was merged with Littleborough and Werneth to form the Littleborough and Milnrow Urban District.
Since 1974, Milnrow has been part of the Metropolitan Borough of Rochdale, in Greater Manchester.
