History of Milledgeville
Milledgeville is a city in and the county seat of Baldwin County in the U.S. state of Georgia. It is northeast of Macon and bordered on the east by the Oconee River. The city was the capital of Georgia from 1804 to 1868, and the population at the 2010 census was 18,772. It is the principal city of the Milledgeville Micropolitan Statistical Area, which includes all of Baldwin County.
Milledgeville was founded by John Milledge in 1803 as the new capital of the state of Georgia. He chose the site because of its central location and its proximity to the Oconee River. The city’s charter was approved by the Georgia General Assembly on December 5, 1803, and Milledgeville formally became the state capital.
The city’s early history is marked by frequent conflicts with Creek Indians, who resented the encroachment of European Americans into their territory. In 1825, the Creek National Council met in Milledgeville to sign the Treaty of Indian Springs, which ceded a large amount of Creek land to the United States.
Milledgeville grew rapidly during the first half of the 19th century. It was the largest city in Georgia from 1807 until the 1860s, when Atlanta surpassed it. It became the home of many wealthy planters and was the site of the governing Georgia Assembly until 1868, when the state capital was moved to Atlanta.
During the American Civil War, Union troops occupied Milledgeville from 1864 to 1865. On November 22, 1864, during Sherman’s famous ” march to the sea,” the Union Army burned much of the city.
After the war, Milledgeville struggled to regain its position as a leading city in Georgia. The state capital was moved to Atlanta in 1868, which dealt a severe blow to Milledgeville’s economy. The city gradually recovered and, by the early 20th century, had regained its status as a major city in Georgia.
