Mildenhall is a town in Suffolk, England. The town is on the River Lark, and is about 20 miles (32 km) northwest of the county town of Ipswich. It had a population of 11,015 at the 2011 Census.
The town is home to Mildenhall Speedway which races under the name of the Mildenhall Fen Tigers. The Fen Tigers race in the National League.
The town was originally named Mildenhall, meaning “the middle hall or settlement”, from the Old English mylen and hāl.
The earliest recorded mention of the town is in the will of King Alfred, who left it to his soninlaw Æthelstan in 918. In the Domesday Book it is called Mildenhale.
Mildenhall’s market is recorded in the Domesday Book. William I granted a charter for a weekly market in 1130; this was confirmed by Henry III in 1227. The market is still held every Tuesday. An annual fair used to be held on 23 June. Another charter, granted by Henry III, allowed a fiveday fair at Whitsun. This was one of England’s biggest medieval fairs: 20,000 people are said to have attended in 1448. The town also had two smaller annual fairs, one around the feast of Saint John the Baptist and another in September.
The Fen Tigers were formed in 1988 and raced in the National League until 2001 when they took a break from racing. They returned to racing in 2004 and have been racing ever since.
