History of Milan

The first recorded reference to Milan, Illinois, in the United States was made by a French Jesuit missionary in 1673 when he noted an Native American village on the Des Moines River about two miles downstream from the present city. The present city was founded in 1831 by John Insley Blair. Mr. Blair had come to Illinois from New Jersey in 1830, and soon after his arrival, he set out to purchase a tract of land which would become the city of Milan. The site he selected was an attractive piece of land situated on a high bluff overlooking the Des Moines River.

In the spring of 1831, Mr. Blair returned to his home in New Jersey and persuaded four of his friends and business associates to join him in his venture. These men were Jacob Duvall, John I. Carson, Samuel Gates, and Samuel C. Blair. With financial backing secured, the group returned to Illinois and purchased 820 acres of land from the federal government. They then divided the land into town lots and began selling them to settlers.

The city was named after the Italian city of Milan by John Insley Blair. He had visited the city of Milan on a business trip in 1829 and was so impressed with it that he decided to name his new city after it. The city of Milan quickly became a thriving community. The first store was built in 1832, and the following year, the Milan Canal Company was organized to build a canal linking the city with the Illinois River. The canal was completed in 1835, and it helped to spur economic growth in the city.

In 1836, Milan was officially incorporated as a city. The first city elections were held in April of that year, and John Insley Blair was elected as the city’s first mayor. By 1850, the population of Milan had grown to almost 2,000 people.

The Civil War caused economic hardship for the city of Milan. The Milan Canal was closed in 1862 by Union troops in order to prevent Confederate troops from using it to move supplies. The closure of the canal dealt a severe blow to the city’s economy, and many businesses closed their doors.

After the war, the city began to slowly recover. The Milan Canal was reopened in 1866, and the city’s economy started to rebound. In the late 19th century, Milan became known as a center for the manufacture of barbed wire and farm implements. The city also became home to a number of other manufacturing businesses, and its population continued to grow.

Today, the city of Milan is a thriving community with a population of over 5,000 people. It is home to a number of small businesses and manufacturing companies. The city has a rich history, and its beautiful setting on the banks of the Des Moines River makes it a popular tourist destination.
