History of Miami (Oklahoma)
Prior to the founding of Miami, Oklahoma in 1891, the area now known as Miami was inhabited by the Ottawa and Modoc Native American tribes. The Miami tribe eventually moved down from Michigan and Wisconsin and settled in this area of northeastern Oklahoma.
In 1891, the Missouri, Kansas & Texas Railway (MK&T) built a tracks through the Indian Territory and a stop called “Berlin” was placed near the present day Miami. A post office was soon established and on July 4th, 1891, the town was officially renamed “Miami” after the Miami tribe.
Miami’s early years were largely defined by the railroad as it became a shipping point for livestock and agricultural products from the surrounding area. The population of Miami began to grow steadily and by the early 1900s, the town had a population of over 1,500.
The discovery of coal in the vicinity also helped to spur Miami’s growth as mining became an important industry in the early 20th century. With the influx of miners and their families, Miami became a more ethnically diverse community with a significant number of African American and European immigrants.
By the mid20th century, Miami had become an important regional center with a bustling downtown and a population of over 10,000. The town continued to grow in the latter part of the century and today, Miami is a thriving city with a population of over 13,000.
