Miami Beach is a coastal resort city in southeastern Florida, United States. It was incorporated on March 26, 1915. The municipality is located on natural and manmade barrier islands between the Atlantic Ocean and Biscayne Bay, the latter of which separates the Beach from the mainland city of Miami. The neighborhood of South Beach, comprising the southernmost 2.5mi of Miami Beach, along with downtown Miami and the Port of Miami, collectively form the commercial center of South Florida.

Miami Beach’s estimated population is 92,307 according to the most recent United States census estimates.Miami Beach is the 26th largest city in Florida based on official 2017 estimates from the US Census Bureau. It has been one of America’s preeminent beach resorts since the early 20th century. In 1979, Miami Beach’s Art Deco Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Art Deco District is the largest collection of Art Deco architecture in the world and comprises hundreds of hotels, apartments and other structures erected between 1923 and 1943. Mediterranean, Streamline Moderne and Art Deco are all represented in the District.

The Historic District is bounded by the Atlantic Ocean on the East, Lenox Court on the West, 6th Street on the South and Dade Boulevard along the Collins Canal to the North. The movement to preserve the Art Deco District’s architectural heritage was led by former interior designer Barbara Capitman, who now has a street in the District named in her honor.

In 1990, the City of Miami Beach designated the Art Deco Historic District as a preservation district. The indepth regulation of new construction is intended to allow the maintenance of the area’s historic character.

In 2000, the National Trust for Historic Preservation placed the Art Deco District on its list of America’s Most Endangered Historic Places. This action was taken in response to multiple demolition proposals that threatened the integrity of the district. In 2006, Miami Beach voters approved a Bond referendum that included $12,500,000 for the purchase and preservation of Art Deco buildings in the Historic District.

In 2007, the Art Deco Society of New York launched a Virtual Walking Tour of the Art Deco District.

The Miami Design Preservation League (MDPL) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit preservation and education organization founded in 1976. MDPL’s mission is to preserve, protect and promote the architectural, cultural, social and environmental integrity of the Miami Design District. The MDPL is headquartered in the Historic Cauley Square Passenger Station in the Miami Design District.

History of Miami Beach

The city of Miami Beach is located on a barrier island off the coast of Florida. The island is about 3 miles long and 1 mile wide. It was originally inhabited by the Tequesta Indians. In 1513, Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de Leon arrived in the area and claimed it for Spain. The area remained sparsely populated for the next 200 years.

In the early 1800s, some settlers from the Bahamas began moving to the area. In 1836, the United States annexed the area and it became part of the Territory of Florida. The area remained mostly undeveloped until the late 1800s when developers began building hotels and resorts. The city was incorporated in 1915.

During the 1920s, Miami Beach became a popular destination for tourists from around the world. The city was dubbed the “American Riviera”. In the 1930s, architect Morris Lapidus designed many of the city’s Art Deco buildings.

During World War II, Miami Beach was used as a training ground for soldiers. After the war, the city became even more popular as a tourist destination. In the 1980s, South Beach became a popular nightlife destination for young people from around the world.

Today, Miami Beach is a major tourist destination. It is home to many luxury hotels, restaurants, and nightclubs. The city also hosts a number of annual events, including the Miami International Boat Show and the Art Basel Miami Beach art fair.
