Mexborough is a town in the Metropolitan Borough of Doncaster, in South Yorkshire, England. It lies on the River Don, and is around 1 mile (1.6 km) from its confluence with the River Dearne. At the 2011 census, it had a population of 13,723.
The town’s name is thought to derive from “Meadow Brough”, meaning “open land near a brook”. The first mention of the town is in the Domesday Book in 1086, where it is listed as “Mexeberie”.
The parish church of St. Peter and St. Paul, Mexborough is a grade II* listed building.
The civil parish was Mexborough Township until 1866 when it was renamed Mexborough. In 1933 the urban district was renamed as Mexborough, before becoming a municipal borough in 1951. The metropolitan borough was renamed in 1974 as Metropolitan Borough of Doncaster.
The Early English style parish church of St Peter and St Paul, founded in 1220, is a grade II* listed building.

History of Mexborough
Mexborough is a town in the Metropolitan Borough of Doncaster, in South Yorkshire, England. It has a population of 13,743, and is on the River Don, in the civil parish of Conisbrough.
The first recorded settlement in what is now Mexborough was a small village called Creckhull, which was mentioned in the Domesday Book in 1086. By the 13th century, a market town called Meaux had developed around the site of the present day town centre. In 1295, the town was granted a charter by King Edward I, and its name was changed to Mexborough.
During the Industrial Revolution, Mexborough became a major coalmining town, with the first mine opening in 1851. The town’s population grew rapidly, reaching 18,000 by the early 20th century. However, the coal industry went into decline from the 1930s onwards, and by the 1980s all the mines had closed.
Today, Mexborough is a thriving market town, with a number of independent shops and businesses. The town also has a growing tourist industry, with visitors coming to see its history and heritage.
