The city of Mesquite is located in northeastern Texas, close to the borders of both Arkansas and Louisiana. It is the Loop 12 city in Dallas County and was founded in 1873. History of Mesquite
Mesquite is a city located inDallas County, in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2010 census, the population was 139,824, making it the 23rdmost populous city in the state of Texas. Mesquite is a suburb of Dallas and is part of the Best Southwest area, which includes Mesquite, Garland, and Sunnyvale. The city has a Mesquite Independent School District with over 22,000 students.
The city was founded on March 14, 1878, by Nealy Dillar as a stop on the Texas and Pacific Railway. The city was named after Mesquite Creek. Dillar’s idea was to build a town that would make money off the railroad. He platted streets, subdivisions, and started selling lots. The first school Mesquite ISD opened in 1879. The city was incorporated in 1887.
Mesquite prospered as a cottonginning and farming center from 1887 to the 1930s, but declined in the years that followed. The city’s population grew from 1,696 in the 1960s to 24,26 to 34,928 in 1980. The population reached 139,824 by 2010.
Mesquite has a councilmanager government style with a city manager appointed by the council. The council consists of the mayor and eight council members. The mayor is elected atlarge for a twoyear term and council members are elected to fouryear terms, two from each of four wards. The current mayor is Stan Pickett, who was elected in May 2013.
The city has several cultural and recreation facilities. The Mesquite Arts Center is a multivenue performing arts center. Mesquite is considered a ” bedroom community ” as it has very little commercial or industrial activity, other than some light manufacturing near Buckingham Road and La Prada Drive, and a concentration of bigbox retailers and strip malls along Interstate 635 and U.S. Highway 80. Nearly all retail establishments in Mesquite are located along these corridors. The notable exception to this trend is Downtown Mesquite, which has preserved and revitalized its Main Street businesses.

Annual precipitation is low, averaging 37.5 inches (95 cm), most of which falls in the spring and summer. Snowfall is low compared to the rest of Texas, averaging only 0.9 inches (2.3 cm) per year from 1981 to 2010. However, in some years, snowfall can be heavy. For example, during the 2009–2010 winter season, Mesquite received 7.5 inches (19 cm) of snowfall, which was the most since the 1979–1980 season when the city received 8.9 inches (23 cm) of snowfall.
As of the 2000 census, there were 115,488 people, 41,165 households, and 28,112 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,349.1 people per square mile (905.8/km²). There were 44,082 housing units at an average density of 888.1 per square mile (343.1/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 63.02% White, 25.48% African American
