Downtown Meriden is home to a variety of businesses and organizations, including the Meriden Green, a 12acre (4.9 ha) park that stretches between Colony Street and Main Street. The park contains a walking path, a playground, a basketball court, a gazebo, and a bandshell, and is the site of the annual Festival of Silver, held on the third Saturday in August. The festival celebrates the city’s history as a former silverproducing center.

History of Meriden
The area now known as Meriden was once part of Wallingford. In 1727, a separate parish was established for the growing number of families in the northern end of that town. The new parish was named Westfield, after the western division of New Haven. There was also a West Fields parish in Wethersfield. In 1746, the legislature officially separated the two West Fields parishes, designating the northern one as Meriden.
The name Meriden is probably derived from the Latin word meridies, meaning “midday” or “south.” The city’s ZIP code is 06450, which spells “Meriden” when projected onto a telephone keypad.
In the 19th century, Meriden became a center for the production of silverware and other metal products. The city’s proximity to Hartford and New Haven made it a convenient location for manufacturing and transportation. By the 20th century, Meriden was known as the “Hardware Capital of the World.” More than 100 companies produced goods such as kitchen utensils, pottery, sewing machines, and bicycles.
The city’s fortunes changed in the mid20th century, as manufacturing began to decline and jobs moved to the suburbs.
