Merced’s history begins with the Native Americans who inhabited the area for thousands of years before the arrival of Europeans. The first European settlers were Spanish missionaries, who founded a mission in the area in 1806. In 1808, the Spanish established a fort near the mission, which served as a waypoint for travelers and a base for the exploration and settlement of California.

In 1846, during the MexicanAmerican War, American forces occupied the area and the city of Merced grew up around the fort. After the war, California became a state and Merced became the county seat.

The city remained a small agricultural town for many years, but began to grow rapidly in the mid20th century as theSan Joaquin Valley became an important agricultural region. The construction of Interstate Highway 5 in the 1960s further spurred growth, and by the 1990s Merced had developed into a modern city with a diversified economy.
