History of Menasha
Menasha is a city in Waupaca County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 13,062 at the 2010 census. The city is located mostly on Little Lake Buttes des Morts, a bay of Lake Winnebago, and partly on the Fox River. Menasha is adjacent to the town of Menasha and the village of Winneconne.
The city’s name comes from the Winnebago word menasha, meaning “thorn” or “rose bush.” The Menominee people relocated to Wisconsin from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan in the early 1800s. They named the area around Little Lake Buttes des Morts “Menasha.”
The first EuroAmerican settler in the area was French Canadian fur trader, Louis Pain, who built a cabin on the west shore of Little Lake Buttes des Morts in 1818. In 1848,ard WinnebagoChief Wassaja and a group of villagers from Neenah Creek moved to the west shore of Little Lake Buttes des Morts. The chief’s grandson, Henry S. Payne, became the first EuroAmerican to be born in Menasha.
By 1852, the population of Menasha consisted of 91 EuroAmericans and 27 Menominee. The Menominee ceded their land rights to the United States in the 1848 Treaty of Lake Poygan. The treaty resulted in the forced removal of the Menominee from Wisconsin to the reservation in Keshena, WI.
In 1851, the Wisconsin Legislature created Winnebago County from parts of Brown and Outagamie counties. The city of Menasha was incorporated in 1883.
The arrival of the Green Bay and Western Railroad in 1884 spurred economic growth in Menasha. Several paper mills were built along the Fox River, including the KimberlyClark mill in 1908. The city’s population grew from 2,471 in 1900 to 5,708 in 1940.
Today, Menasha is a bedroom community for Appleton and Oshkosh. The city is home to several major industries, including Bemis Company, Ruplinger Industries, and J. J. Keller & Associates.
