History of Medicine Lodge

The city of Medicine Lodge is located in Barber County, Kansas, and was originally founded in 1867. The city was named after the Medicine Lodge River, which runs through the area. The river was so named by the Native Americans who used the area for their medicinal plants.

The first settlers of European descent arrived in the area in the 1850s, and a post office was established in 1857. In 1867, the city was officially platted and registered with the state of Kansas.

During the late 1800s, Medicine Lodge became well known as a stop on the Chisholm Trail, the famous cattle trail that ran from Texas to Kansas. The city was also home to a number of large ranches, and was an active shipping point for cattle.

In the early 1900s, the city began to experience a decline in population, due in part to the dwindling cattle industry. However, the city experienced a resurgence in the 1920s with the discovery of oil in the area. The city grew rapidly during this time, and new businesses and industries began to move in.

Today, Medicine Lodge is a thriving small city with a proud history. The city is home to several museums and historical sites, and its downtown area has been revitalized in recent years.
