Medford is a city located in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, in the United States. As of the 2010 census, Medford’s population was 56,173. It is the 9th largest municipality in Massachusetts and the 530th largest city in the United States. The city is home to Tufts University.
Medford was first settled in 1630 as part of Charlestown. The area was originally called “Mistick” by the local Native Americans. The first European settlers named it “Meadford” after Meadowford in England. In 1637, the name was officially changed to “Medford” by the Massachusetts General Court.
