History of McPherson
The city of McPherson was founded in 1864 by Alexander McPherson, a Scottish immigrant who served in the Union army during the Civil War. McPherson named the city after himself. The city’s first post office opened in 1865. In 1867, the city was incorporated.
The city grew rapidly due to the presence of the railroad. By 1884, the population had reached 1,600. The city continued to grow and prosper through the early twentieth century.
In May of 1966, a devastating tornado hit the city, killing seventeen people and injuring hundreds more. The city rebuilt and continues to thrive today.
