History of McMinnville
McMinnville is a city in Yamhill County, Oregon, United States. The population was 32, 187 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Yamhill County. McMinnville is located at the confluence of the Willamette River and its tributary, the Yamhill River, in the northwestern part of the county. McMinnville was founded in 1856 as a small farming community and was incorporated as a city in 1876. It was named after its founder, William C. McMinn, and has been informally nicknamed “Mac” or “Mac Town”. McMinnville is home to Linfield College, a private fouryear college affiliated with the American Baptist Churches USA, and the Evergreen Aviation Museum.
The area around McMinnville was first settled by EuroAmerican settlers in the 1840s. McMinnville was founded by William C. McMinn, an early settler, in 1856. McMinnville was incorporated as a city in 1876. It was named after its founder, William C. McMinn. McMinnville is home to Linfield College, a private fouryear college affiliated with the American Baptist Churches USA, and the Evergreen Aviation Museum.
The first known permanent EuropeanAmerican settlement in what is now McMinnville was the Oliver Norris account in 1844 of the Donation Land Claim Act. Norris built a log cabin and grew tobacco on his claim near presentday 3rd and Ford streets. He occasionally gathered wapato tubers from nearby creeks for food.
The Yamhill River flows into the Willamette River at McMinnville. The Yamhill River was named by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark on their Lewis and Clark Expedition. According to Clark’s field notes, they encountered the Yamhill River at approximately 45°3′35″N123°14′29″W. They camped near the river on March 29, 1806.
In 1856, William C. McMinn founded McMinnville, naming it after himself. He built a grist mill, a tannery, and a general store near the confluence of the Yamhill and Willamette rivers. McMinn also donated land for the construction of both a Baptist church and a Methodist church.
In 1858, the California Gold Rush began, bringing many miners and settlers to Oregon. McMinnville was incorporated as a city in 1876.
McMinnville is home to Linfield College, a private fouryear college affiliated with the American Baptist Churches USA. The school was founded in 1849 by the Oregon Baptist Educational Society. The school began as a academy and was named McMinnville Academy. The name was changed to McMinnville College in 1883, and then to Linfield College in 1922.
The Evergreen Aviation Museum is also located in McMinnville. The museum was founded in 1991 by former logger, pilot, and entrepreneur Del Smith and his son Michael. It is home to the world’s largest privately held collection of vintage military, commercial, and general aviation aircraft.
McMinnville is located in the Willamette Valley at the confluence of the Yamhill and Willamette rivers. The city has a total area of 8.49 square miles (22.07 km2), of which 8.48 square miles (22.04 km2) is land and 0.01 square miles (0.03 km2) is water.
