History of Mattoon
Mattoon is a city in Coles County, Illinois, United States. The city refers to itself as “The Family City” and its population was 18,555 at the 2010 census. Mattoon is home to the headquarters of BunnOMatic Corporation and a branch office of the Illinois State Police.
The Mattoon area was first settled in 1853 by Amos Rhoads. The city was named after Rhoads’ friend, William Mattoon, who was a judge in Charleston, Illinois. The Mattoon post office was established in 1855. The city was chartered on February 10, 1858. In 1867, the Wabash Railroad was built through Mattoon, which spurred economic growth in the area.
The 1920s saw a period of growth in Mattoon, with the population reaching 8,912 by 1930. The city’s economy was largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The volume of rail traffic through Mattoon increased during World War II, when the city became a stop on the “Purple Heart Trail” between St. Louis, Missouri and Evansville, Indiana.
