Matlock is a beautiful town in England that is definitely worth a visit! The town is located in Derbyshire in the Midlands and is well known for its picturesque scenery. There are plenty of things to see and do in Matlock, so you’ll definitely not be bored during your stay.

History of Matlock

The town of Matlock is located in Derbyshire, England on the River Derwent. It is situated at the southern edge of the Peak District National Park. The town has a population of approximately 16,000 people.

The history of Matlock dates back to the Iron Age when a hill fort was built on the cliffs overlooking the River Derwent. The fort was occupied by the Romans during their occupation of Britain and there is evidence of a Roman settlement called Salinae located just outside of the town.

After the Roman withdrawal from Britain, the area around Matlock continued to be inhabited by the AngloSaxons. A number of Saxon burials have been found in the town and surrounding area.

Matlock is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 as having two churches and two mills. By the 13th century, Matlock had grown to become a market town with a weekly market being held every Wednesday.

During the English Civil War, Matlock was a Royalist stronghold and was besieged by Parliamentary forces on a number of occasions.

The coming of the Industrial Revolution to Derbyshire in the late 18th century saw Matlock develop into a resort town with many wealthy industrialists building houses in the area. The town became known as a spa town due to the number of health hotels and baths that were built to take advantage of the town’s natural spring water.

The Victorian era saw Matlock continue to grow as a popular tourist destination with a number of new hotels and attractions being built. The railway arrived in the town in 1849 which made Matlock even more accessible to visitors.

Today, Matlock is a popular tourist destination with many visitors coming to enjoy the scenic surroundings and attractions such as Matlock Bath, Heights of Abraham and Gulliver’s Kingdom. The town also has a number of independent shops, cafes and restaurants.
