History of Massillon

Massillon is a city in Stark County, Ohio, United States. The population was 32,149 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Stark County and the 34th largest city in Ohio. The city lies on the west bank of the Tuscarawas River, due east of Canton and south of Akron in Northeast Ohio. Massillon is notable as the site of the pro football hall of fame.

The area was originally inhabited by the Mingo Indians, who were displaced after the Treaty of Greenville was signed in 1795. EuropeanAmerican settlers began to move into the area in the late 18th century. In 1805, George Green, a Quaker from New Jersey, founded the village of Kendal, which he platted with 64 lots. The village was renamed Massillon in 1808 for Jean Baptiste Massillon, a French Catholic bishop. The town was incorporated in 1811.

The canalsiding community became important in the coal and iron industries. The Massillon Rolling Mill was built in 1843, the first in Ohio. The Massillon Iron Bridge Company was founded in 1866, and constructed the first of its projections across the Tuscarawas River in 1868. The second bridge, produced by the Wrought Iron Bridge Company of Canton, was completed in 1881 and currently spans 1,100 feet (340 m). Massillon Bridge was a major site in the Steel Mill Strike of 1902.

The H. Bauer Brewing Company was founded in 1886. Massillon’s Solemn Night, the Charles Grandison Newell murder trial of 1886, and the Mike Donlin–Casey Stengel fight of 1912, were each covered by the national media.

The city was also a station on the Underground Railroad.

The largest employer in Massillon in 1910 was the M. Grodin Company, a manufacturer of farm implements.
