History of Massena

Massena, NY is a town in northern New York, near the Canadian border. It is part of St. Lawrence County. The town was founded in 1802. The first settlers were from Massachusetts. The town was named after Andre Massena, a French general who fought in the Napoleonic Wars. The town grew slowly at first, but began to grow rapidly after the construction of the Erie Canal in 1825. The canal made Massena a major transportation hub, and the town became an important industrial center. The town’s population peaked in the mid20th century, but has declined since then.
