History of Marysville

The first inhabitants of what is now Marysville were the Nisenan (also called the Southern Maidu or North Fork Maidu), Maidu, Washo, and Paiute Indian tribes. These indigenous people resided along the rivers and streams in the valleys of the Sierra Nevada foothills and in the valleys and mountains of the northern Sacramento region. The Nisenan lived in small communities along the creeks and streams of the Yuba and Feather Rivers. The Maidu lived in the foothills and mountains north of the Sacramento River, in the vicinity of presentday Marysville and northeast of Sacramento. The Washo lived in the Lake Tahoe and Carson River valleys, while the Paiute resided in the Carson Desert to the east and northeast of Marysville.

The first Europeans to explore the Marysville area were part of the Gaspar de Portolà expedition in 1769. The expedition was seeking a land route to Monterey, California. They camped along the Yuba River on August 18, near the present site of Bridgeport. The next day they continued their journey downriver and camped near the present site of Marysville on August 19.

The first permanent European settlement in the Marysville area was the John Sutter ranch, which was established in 1839. Sutter, a Swiss immigrant, settled in the area to raise cattle and grow crops. He built a fort (Sutter’s Fort) and brought in families and artisans from all over the world to help him develop the ranch. Sutter’s Fort became a thriving community with a gristmill, sawmill, blacksmith shop, carpenter shop, and more.

In 1848, gold was discovered in the Sierra Nevada foothills by James W. Marshall. This event changed the course of history for Marysville and the state of California. Thousands of people came to the area in search of gold. Marysville became a supply center for the miners, with stores selling food, clothing, and mining equipment. Hotels and taverns were built to accommodate the influx of people.

The first newspaper in Marysville, the Marysville Appeal, was founded in 1849. The town was incorporated in 1850 and became the county seat of Yuba County.

The 1850s was a time of great growth for Marysville. More hotels and stores were built, as well as a courthouse and jail. A stagecoach line was established and the population of the town grew to over 5,000.

In 1856, Marysville was almost completely destroyed by a fire that started in a bakery on D Street. The fire quickly spread through the wooden buildings in the town. Only a few buildings were left standing after the fire.

Despite this setback, Marysville quickly rebuilt and continued to grow. By 1860, the population had reached 7,500. The town continued to prosper during the Civil War, as it was a key supply center for the Union Army.

After the war, Marysville became a transportation hub, with stagecoach, riverboat, and railroad lines all converging in the town. The town continued to grow throughout the late 1800s and early 1900s.

In recent years, Marysville has experienced a revitalization, with new businesses and restaurants moving into the downtown area. The city is also home to many events and festivals throughout the year, including the Gold Rush Days celebration in May, the Marysville Peach Festival in August, and the Dickens’ Christmas Fair in December.
