Maryport is a seaside town in Cumbria, England. It lies on the coast of the Solway Firth, to the south of Carlisle and to the north of Workington. Maryport has a long history as a fishing port and today is also a centre for the yachting industry. History of Maryport
The Roman fort of Papana, which was located on the site of the present town, was probably built in the late 1st century AD. The fort was situated on the west bank of the Solway Firth and was connected to the Hadrian’s Wall by a road running through what is now Carlisle. It is thought that the fort was occupied by a cohort of 500 soldiers. The fort was abandoned in the 4th century.
The town of Maryport was founded in 1778 by Sir James Lowther, 1st Earl of Lonsdale. Sir James had inherited the estate of Whitehaven from his grandfather, Hugh Lowther, 2nd Viscount Lonsdale. Sir James developed the port of Maryport and built a shipyard. The town grew rapidly and by 1811 it had a population of 5,000.
The shipyard was destroyed by fire in 1812 but was quickly rebuilt. It continued to operate until 1883 when it was closed due to competition from larger shipyards.
The Lowther family continued to be major landowners in the area and in 1844 Sir James Lowther, 2nd Earl of Lonsdale, built a new harbour at Nethertown, two miles to the south of Maryport. This new harbour was connected to the town by a railway and it soon became the main port for the export of coal from the Lowther estates.
The railway was extended northwards to Carlisle in 1854 and Maryport became an important junction on the London and North Western Railway.
The town continued to grow throughout the 19th century and by 1901 it had a population of over 20,000. The town was badly affected by the First World War and the shipyard and railway workshop were both closed.
The town began to decline in the 1920s but revived somewhat in the 1930s when a steelworks was built. The steelworks closed in 1980 and Maryport once again entered a period of decline.
The town has a population of around 10,000. The shipyard has been replaced by a marina and there are plans to develop the harbour area.
