Martinsville, Virginia is located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. The city has a population of 13,000 and is the county seat of Henry County. The area was settled by ScotchIrish and German immigrants in the mid1700s. The city was named for Colonel Thomas Martin, who was a member of the House of Burgesses and lived in the area.

History of Martinsville
Martinsville is a city in and the county seat of Morgan County, Indiana, United States. The population was 11,828 at the 2010 census. Martinsville was established in 1822 on the East Fork of White River. It is the home of Martinsville High School, the first high school in the state of Indiana. The city is also home to Ivy Tech Community College and the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame.
Martinsville was platted in 1822. It was named for General James Martin, who owned the land on which the town was built. James Martin was born in 1767 in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. He was the son of John Martin, a blacksmith, and Jane Carson Martin, both of ScotsIrish descent. In 1774, the family moved to Harrison County, Virginia (now West Virginia). James Martin married Elizabeth Arnett in 1789. He served in the United States Army during the War of 1812 and was wounded at the Battle of Lundy’s Lane in 1814. He retired from the Army in 1815 with the rank of brigadier general.
In 1816, Martin and his family settled in Owen County, Indiana. He built a log cabin and a gristmill on White River. He also operated a ferry across the river. In 1822, he platted the town of Martinsville and donated land for a courthouse and a jail. He also donated land for a public square, which is now the site of the Morgan County Courthouse.
Martin served in the Indiana Legislature from 1822 to 1824. He was elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1824 and served one term, from 1825 to 1827. He did not seek reelection in 1826. He returned to Indiana and served in the Indiana Senate from 1829 to 1832. He was elected as a Jacksonian to the Twentythird Congress and served from 1833 to 1837. He was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1836 to the Twentyfourth Congress.
Martin died on March 14, 1838, in Martinsville. He is buried in the city’s Maple Hill Cemetery.
