Sights in Martinsburg
Martinsburg is the capital of West Virginia and the county seat of Berkeley County. The city is located approximately 90 miles (145 km) from Washington, D.C., making it a part of the Washington metropolitan area. The population of Martinsburg was 17,227 at the 2010 census.
The land on which Martinsburg now stands was originally purchased from the native Confederated Tribes of the Iroquois by Isaac Van Meter in 1732. Martinsburg was established by an act of the Virginia General Assembly on October 17, 1778, and named in honor of Colonel Thomas Brunswick, who had recently been defeated in the Battle of Saratoga.
The town’s first mayor, Judge John Bolt, was elected to office in 1781. The town’s geographic location at the confluence of several major roads made it a transportation hub for early settlers.
In 1793, the town was designated as the county seat of Berkeley County, which was created from parts of Frederick and Hampshire Counties.
Martinsburg became a prosperous town due to its position on the turnpike road and, later, the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad. In 1849, the B&O enacted a policy to only ship freight through one central location, which caused a dramatic increase in business and population for Martinsburg.
The Civil War greatly impacted Martinsburg and Berkeley County. Although Berkeley County remained in the Union, many of its residents sympathized with the Confederacy and there were a number of skirmishes and raids throughout the war. The most notable occurred on July 1–2, 1863, when Confederate Generals Jubal Early and Richard Ewell led 12,000 troops on a raid through the town, burning numerous buildings, including the B&O Railroad Depot.
Following the war, and during Reconstruction, Martinsburg’s economy continued to grow. The town became home to several large manufacturing plants, including a glass factory and two iron foundries.
Martinsburg’s historic district includes over 1,300 buildings, many of which are included in the National Register of Historic Places. The district encompasses the core of the original town, as laid out by James Rumsey when he laid claim to the area in 1782.
Some of the notable buildings in the district include the Berkeley County Courthouse (1820), the Van Meter House (1796), and the Belle Boyd House (1858).
The Martinsburg Roundhouse Complex, located just outside of downtown, is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The complex was built in 1884 by the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad and was used to service and repair locomotives. The roundhouse was in operation until 1977 and is currently being redeveloped into a mixeduse complex with office, retail, and residential space.
The Godfrey Miller House, located at 801 East Moler Avenue, is a notable example of midcentury modern architecture. The house was designed by Godfrey Miller, a student of Frank Lloyd Wright, and was built in 1953.
The Martinsburg Public Library, located at 123 South Queen Street, is a Carnegie Library and was built in 1904. The library is a striking example of Classical Revival architecture and features an Ionic portico, a grand stairway, and an ornate interior.
The Berkeley County Historical Society, located at 130 West Stephen Street, is housed in the former Berkeley Hotel (built 1868). The society operates a museum with exhibits on the county’s history, as well as a research library with historic documents, photographs, and newspapers.
