The town began as “New Town” around 1849, when Colonel Walter Martinez (for whom the city is named) and William M. Smith were awarded the Rancho El Pinole Mexican land grant. The land included three Mexican land grants: Rancho El Pinole, Rancho Punta de Anita, and Rancho Martinez.
The town was laid out in 1849 by Col. Martinez and William M. Smith, and was named after Martinez. It became the Contra Costa County Seat in 1850, but lost the title to the much larger and more centrally located city of Concord in 1872. The city is a member of the National League of Cities.

History of Martinez
Martinez, California is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. Part of the San Francisco Bay Area and with a population of 35,824 at the 2010 census, Martinez is the county seat of Contra Costa County.
The city was originally founded in 1849 by John O’Farrell, who named it after his friend, General Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo. Vallejo had served as a military governor of California and had also helped establish the state’s first Bear Flag Republic during the MexicanAmerican War.
In 1849, O’Farrell laid out the town’s streets and squares, and Martinez officially became a city in 1851. During the 1850s, the city grew rapidly, and agriculture soon became the mainstay of the local economy.
Fruit orchards and vineyards were planted, and the city became known for its plums, peaches, and grapes. Wheat, barley, and oats were also grown, and dairying became an important industry.
In the late 19th century, Martinez became a major shipping point for California’s burgeoning wine industry. The city was also home to a number of large manufacturing plants, including a large cannery and a railroad car repair facility.
The 20th century brought further growth to Martinez, and the city’s population reached nearly 30,000 by 1950. The city continued to be a major center for agriculture and industry, and a number of new factories and warehouses were built in the city during the postwar years.
