History of Marlborough

Marlborough, Massachusetts was first settled in 1629 and was officially incorporated in 1660. The city was named after John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, an English general who served in the War of the Spanish Succession.

The early years of Marlborough were defined by the establishment of several large farms and the growth of the iron industry. The town quickly became a leading producer of nails and agricultural equipment. In the mid1800s, Marlborough became a major shoe manufacturing center and many of the factories remain in operation today.

The city underwent a period of significant growth in the early 1900s, thanks in part to the construction of the Boston & Worcester Street Railway. Marlborough became known as the “Hat Center of the World” due to the large number of hat factories in operation. The city also became a major center for the electronics industry, with companies such as Raytheon and Digital Equipment Corporation establishing a presence.

Marlborough has continued to grow in recent years, with the opening of several new shopping centers and the development of a thriving biotech industry. The city is also home to a number of historical landmarks, including the Churchill House (a museum dedicated to the Duke of Marlborough) and the Marlborough Historical Society.
