History of Marion (Indiana)
Marion is a city in Grant County, Indiana, United States. The population was 29,948 at the 2010 census. The city is the county seat of Grant County. It is named for Francis Marion, a Brigadier General from South Carolina in the American Revolutionary War.
Marion is the home of Indiana Wesleyan University, the largest private university in the state of Indiana. Wesleyan College, founded in 1873 as Marion Female College, is one of the first women’s colleges in the nation.
The city of Marion was founded in 1844. The city was named for Revolutionary War hero Francis Marion. Marion was platted by David W. Ross and J.C. Ensley on December 18, 1845. The city was officially chartered by an act of the Indiana General Assembly on January 18, 1851.
The Wabash and Erie Canal reached Marion in 1853. The Marion Elves, a minor league baseball team, began play in Marion in 1905.
