History of Marinette
Marinette, Wisconsin, is a city in Marinette County in the state of Wisconsin. The city is located along the Menominee River, at the mouth of Green Bay, which is part of Lake Michigan. The population of the city was 10,468 at the 2010 census.
The city’s namesake is MarcAntoine Caillot dit Marinette, a FrenchCanadian fur trader who was one of the first European settlers in the area. The Menominee people were the area’s original inhabitants.
The first permanent settlement in Marinette was established in 1818 by Jacques Vieaux. Vieux was a fur trader who built a trading post along the Menominee River. The post became a successful trading outpost and attracted other settlers to the area.
In 1854, the Wisconsin Legislature created Marinette County from parts of Oconto and Shawano Counties. The county seat was originally located in Peshtigo, but was moved to Marinette in 1855.
Marinette was incorporated as a city in 1881. The city continued to grow throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries due to the timber and paper industries.
The paper industry began in Marinette in 1881 with the opening of the Menasha Woodenware Company. The company manufactured wooden paper pulp containers, which were used by the paper industry. The company later expanded into the production of furniture and other wood products.
The KimberlyClark Corporation also has a long history in Marinette. The company was founded in Neenah, Wisconsin in 1872, but relocated to Marinette in 1915. The company’s products include toilet paper, paper towels, and facial tissues.
The H.C. Prange Company was a department store chain that was headquartered in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. The company operated a store in Marinette from 1916 until 2002, when the store was closed.
