History of Marietta (Ohio)
Marietta is a city in and county seat of Washington County, Ohio, United States. The area was settled by the Ohio Company of Associates in 1788 as the first permanent American settlement outside the original thirteen colonies after the United States Declaration of Independence. It was incorporated as a city in 1802. Marietta is located in southeastern Ohio on the side of the Muskingum River, which flows southwestward through the center of the state.
The city develops along the river valley and ridges to the east and south of the river. The topography of the area is mostly gently rolling hills. Originally a rural Ohio River port town and transfer point for passengers and freight heading downriver to points in Kentucky and West Virginia, Marietta began to grow rapidly in the early 1830s with the opening of the Ohio and Erie Canal. The canal cuts through the ridges that bound the river valley, and flatboats and barges loaded with agricultural products and manufactured goods from the interior of Ohio could float all the way to the eastern seaboard. The development of the railroad in the 1850s spelled the end of the canal era, but Marietta remains an important regional center in southeastern Ohio.

The first log cabin in the Northwest Territory, Watauga, was built by Pennsylvania carpenter Appletonrust Cleveland in Marietta in 1788. In 1802, Marietta was incorporated as a city, and in 1803, it was made the county seat of Washington County. Marietta’s population grew rapidly in the early 1800s. The city was a stop on the Underground Railroad, and Marietta College was founded in 1835.
The 1830s were a time of great change in Marietta. In 1831, the first steamboat arrived in Marietta, and in 1832, the first bridge was built across the Muskingum River. The opening of the Ohio and Erie Canal in 1833 made Marietta an important river port. The canal connected Marietta to the Ohio River and the Erie Canal, which ran from the Hudson River to Lake Erie.
The canal made Marietta a thriving river port city. Farmers from the interior of Ohio could now float their crops and livestock down the Ohio River to Marietta, where they could be loaded onto flatboats and barges and transported to markets in the East.
