History of Manitowoc
Manitowoc is a city in Manitowoc County, Wisconsin, United States. The city is the county seat of Manitowoc County. Manitowoc is located on Lake Michigan at the mouth of the Manitowoc River. In 2010, the city had a population of 33,736, making it the fourthlargest city in the state of Wisconsin in terms of population. It is part of the Manitowoc Metropolitan Statistical Area, which includes all of Manitowoc County. The city’s sister city is Kamogawa, Japan.
Manitowoc among a few other settlements in the state was founded due to the availability of land along the western shore of Lake Michigan. In the 1820s, Moravian missionaries arrived in the area and founded the first permanent settlement. However, it wasn’t until 1835 that the area saw organized development with the arrival of several Belgian families. A large portion of the new settlers were from the Walloon region of Belgium, which is why the city’s downtown area is still known as the “Belgian Settlement”.
In 1836, Manitowoc was designated as the county seat of Manitowoc County. The county courthouse and jail were both built in the downtown area. The county courthouse is the oldest still in use in the state of Wisconsin.
One of the early industries in the city was shipbuilding. The first ship built in Manitowoc was the schooner Hannah, launched in 1840. Over the next several decades, Manitowoc would become one of the leading shipbuilding centers in the Midwest, with companies such as the Manitowoc Shipbuilding Company, which built the first Americanmade steelhulled steamship, the SS Milwaukee. The Milwaukee, a 321foot long, 9,800 ton vessel, was launched in 1896. It was the largest and most technologically advanced ship ever built in Manitowoc, and was at the time, the largest ship ever built on the Great Lakes.
The Manitowoc Shipbuilding Company went on to build some of the most famous ships in American history, including the USS Texas, the USS Virginia, the USS Wisconsin, and the USS Missouri. The Missouri, better known as the “Mighty Mo”, was the last battleship ever built by the United States, and was the site of the surrender of the Japanese Empire at the end of World War II.
In the early 20th century, the Manitowoc area became wellknown for its production of bratwurst. In 1902, John J. and Mathilda Greiser opened a small butcher shop in downtown Manitowoc. The business soon became known for its bratwurst, which were made from a secret recipe that Mathilda had brought with her from Germany. The Greisers’ bratwurst quickly became popular, and in 1909, they started selling their bratwurst at baseball games at Milwaukee’s County Stadium. The Greisers’ bratwurst business continued to grow, and in 1925, they built a new facility on the east side of Manitowoc. The new plant could produce up to a million pounds of bratwurst per year. Today, the original Greiser’s Brat House is still in operation, and is one of the city’s most popular tourist attractions.
The city of Manitowoc is also home to the RahrWest Art Museum, which contains the largest collection of 19th and 20th century art in Northeastern Wisconsin. The museum is housed in the historic Rahr mansion, which was built in 1854.
In recent years, the city of Manitowoc has undergone something of a renaissance.
