History of Manistee

Before settlers arrived in Manistee, the area was inhabited by the Odawa people. The name “Manistee” is derived from an Odawa word meaning “river with Islands”. The first European settlers to arrive in the area were French fur trappers, who established a trading post near the presentday Manistee River in 1831. In 1837, the United States government established Fort Michilimackinac in the area.

In 1841, the town of Manistee was founded. It rapidly became a major lumbering center, with several sawmills and a large number of workers employed in the sawmills and in the lumber camps. In 1855, the first steampowered sawmill in Manistee was built. By the 1860s, Manistee was one of the largest lumbering centers in the Midwest, with a population of over 5,000.

The 1870s were a period of great prosperity for Manistee. Several large hotels were built, including theArcadia and theManistee House.
