Manassas is a city located in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The city is situated within both Prince William County and the independent city of Manassas Park. The 2010 census showed that the population was 37,821. The city is 26 miles southwest of downtown Washington, D.C. and apart of the WashingtonArlingtonAlexandria, DCVAMDWV Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Within the city, there is the Manassas National Battlefield Park which commemorates the two major battles that occurred during the American Civil War. History of Manassas
The first settlers of what is now Manassas were Native Americans who settled in the area between 8,000 and 10,000 years ago. The most prominent group were the Siouanspeaking Mana, who lived in the area for more than 4,000 years before being forced out by the Iroquois in the 16th century. The Iroquois lost control of the area to the Algonquianspeaking Powhatan in the early 17th century.
The name Manassas comes from an Algonquian word meaning “stream of swans.” The area was listed on early maps as “Swansons”, “Swannsons”, and “Swan’s Station”.
The first recorded European settlement in the area was made by an English colonist named JohnSelfridge in 1732. Manassas was established as a town in 1852 and incorporated as a city in 1975.
During the American Civil War, the Second Battle of Manassas (also known as the Battle of Second Bull Run) was fought near the city on August 28–30, 1862. The battle resulted in a Confederate victory, which helped lead to the eventual success of the Northern Virginia Campaign.
