History of Mamaroneck
Mamaroneck is a city in southern Westchester County, New York, United States. The city is on the eastern shore of Long Island Sound in the town of Mamaroneck, directly adjacent to the cities of Rye and Harrison. The population was 18,929 at the 2010 census. There are two villages within the city, Larchmont and Mamaroneck, which are served by separate fire, police and school districts. A third village, Rye Neck, is coextensive with the City of Mamaroneck but operates primarily as a separate entity, having its own fire, police and post office departments, school district, library and recreation programs.
The earliest known inhabitants of the present site of Mamaroneck were the Siwanoy, a branch of the Algonquian peoples. They fished the rich waters off the Long Island Sound and hunted the land for small game. By 1640, Hutchinson’s River was recognized as the boundary between Dutch Westchester and English Eastchester and further settlements followed on both sides of the border. In 1661, the colonial Assembly of New York established the County of Westchester and Mamaroneck became one of its original townships.
In 1775, the Battle of Mamaroneck was fought here during the Revolutionary War.
In 1854, the Village of Mamaroneck was incorporated. A year later, the Villages of Larchmont and Rye Neck followed suit. In 1932, the three villages were joined into one city, Mamaroneck.
Mamaroneck has a long and rich history. The first European settlers were the Dutch, who came to the area in the 1600s. The Dutch named the area “Mamaroneck” after a Native American tribe called the Siwanoy. The Siwanoy were part of the Algonquin people, and they lived off the land by hunting and fishing.
The Dutch settlement of Mamaroneck grew slowly. In 1661, the English took over the area after winning a war against the Dutch. The English government established Westchester County, and Mamaroneck became one of its original townships.
In 1775, the Revolutionary War came to Mamaroneck. The Battle of Mamaroneck was fought here, and it was a victory for the American Colonists.
In the 1800s, Mamaroneck developed into a thriving community. It was incorporated as a village in 1854. Larchmont and Rye Neck soon followed suit. In 1932, the three villages joined together to form the City of Mamaroneck.
