Maghull is built on two main roads which meet at a crossroads in the centre of the town, Maghull Square. These are the East Lancashire Road (A580), which links Maghull withLiverpool and Southport, and the Northway (A59), which passes through Maghull en route from Preston to Ormskirk.
To the north of Maghull is Melling, Lathom, and Tarleton, while to the south is Lydiate, Formby, and Crosby. To the east is Aintree and Walton while Bootle borders to the west.
Maghull’s development as a town began in the early 19th century with the building of a turnpike road between Liverpool and Preston. This made it possible for people to live in Maghull and work in Liverpool. The population of Maghull grew rapidly during the Victorian era as a result of this and the construction of a railway line through the town in 1848.

History of Maghull
Maghull is a town and civil parish in Sefton, Merseyside, England. The town lies within the historic county boundaries of Lancashire. It is 5 miles (8 km) northeast of Liverpool, 18 miles (29 km) from Warrington and 20 miles (32 km) from Southport. Maghull originally developed as a coaching stop on the Liverpool to Preston turnpike road. The isolation of the community was ended when the Liverpool, Ormskirk and Preston Railway were constructed in 1848 and Maghull station opened. The development of Maghull as a London suburb began when land was sold for residential development in 1889. The population growth of the town increased rapidly in the early 20th century when Maghull New Town was designated in 1936.
Maghull is recorded in the Domesday Book as being part of the hundred of West Derby, an area which covered a large part of west Lancashire. The manor of Maghull was held by the son of Orme, from whom it derives its name. The land was acquired by the Molyneux family in 1357. Sir Richard Molyneux, who was born in Maghull, established the Free Grammar School in the town in 1595.
Land in Maghull was first sold for residential development in 1889. St Andrew’s Church was built in 1891 and Maghull town hall was completed in 1892. The first section of Deyes Lane Cottage Hospital opened in 1900. The number of houses in Maghull increased rapidly in the early 20th century. The civil parish of Maghull had a population of 3,015 in 1911.
Maghull New Town was designated in 1936. The first housing estates were built in the late 1930s. Maghull was expanding rapidly in the 1950s and 1960s.
