History of Lufkin
Lufkin is a city in and the county seat of Angelina County, Texas, United States. The population was 35,067 at the 2010 census. It is the principal city of the Lufkin, Texas metropolitan statistical area, which consists of Angelina County. Lufkin is located within the Deep East Texas subregion.
The city was founded in 1884 by Charles Lufkin and William Pettus in anticipation of the Houston, East and West Texas Railway (HET), which would pass through the city. The HETCO Railroad (now Union Pacific) built its own line through Lufkin in 1891. By 1897, Lufkin had become the trade center for a large area of East Texas. Lufkin was incorporated as a city on February 16, 1901.
The city’s economy was long based on the timber industry. Major industries now include health care, retail, and manufacturing.
Lufkin has served as the headquarters for TempleInland, a major lumber and paper manufacturer, since 1900. The company was founded in Lufkin, and at one time its corporate offices were in the city. In 2008, Weyerhaeuser announced it would purchase the majority of TempleInland’s lumber operations.
Lufkin Industries, Inc. producesindustrial machinery, including cranes and other material handling equipment for oilfields, the U.S. military, and other applications.
